Endangered species Introduction
An Endangered (EN) species is a species which has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN) Red List as likely to become died out.
In 2012,the IUCN Red List featured 2655 Plant species as endangered worldwide. The figures for 1998 were, respectively, 1197
Though labeled a list, the IUCN Red List is a system of assessing the global conservation status of species that includes “Data Deficient” (DD) species-species for which more data and assessment is required before their status may be determined – as well species comprehensively assessed by the IUCN’s species assessment process.
Cause of Endangered species
- Deforestation.
- General use elsewhere.
- Insecurity of Species.
- Commercialization.
- Increasing demand.
- Loss of habitat.
- Urbanization.
- Overexploitation.
The IUCN categories Endangered species
(1) Extinct (EX)
No longer in existence; lost or especially having died out leaving representatives
Example: Vanda roxburghii.
2). Extinct in the wild (EW)
Captive individuals survive, but there i no free-living, natural population.
Example: Escobaria vivipara Nutt.
3). Critically endangered (CR)
Faces an extremely high risk of extinction in the immediate future.
Example:- Aconitum ferox
4). Endangered (EN)
Faces a high risk of extinction in the near future.
Example: Madhuca longifolia
(5). Valnerable (VU)
Faces a high risk of endangerment in the medium term.
Example:-Gymnema sylvestre (Meshshringi)
6). Near-threatened (NT)
May be considered threatened in the near future.
Example: Rauvolfia serpentina
7). Least concern (LC)
No immediate threat to species survival.
Example:-Symplocos racemosu.
